Born simultaneously in Berlin and in Kyiv, the “Tacheles Kunstinitiative” and the “Paris Commune Street” have experienced similar developments as symbols of underground culture. In the 1990s, Kyiv and Berlin indeed became the centers of multiple protest sites, echoing the popular idea that “urban air makes you free”. Far from being the only ones to experience this phenomenon, the two cities mirror a more global movement of youth liberation in Eastern Europe, while squats appear also in Moscow or in Leningrad - now St Petersburg.
